Il film è ispirato al libro dello stesso anno di Nicholas Pileggi Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, che dettaglia le attività criminali dei mafiosi statunitensi Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal e Anthony "The Ant" Spilotro nel mondo dei casinò della Las Vegas degli anni ottanta.

Viene spesso considerato la terza parte di una trilogia del regista sulla mafia, iniziata nel 1973 con Mean Streets - Domenica in chiesa, lunedì all'inferno e proseguita nel 1990 con Quei bravi ragazzi, quest'ultimo scritto sempre con la collaborazione di Pileggi.

Per la sua interpretazione, Stone venne candidata all'Oscar e vinse il Golden Globe per la migliore attrice in un film drammatico,[2] mentre Scorsese ottenne una candidatura a quello per il miglior regista.
