Il film, sceneggiato da Gore Vidal, venne co-finanziato dalla rivista per adulti Penthouse e prodotto da Guccione con l'italiano Franco Rossellini. Io, Caligola è famoso per essere, visti i contenuti forti, uno dei più malfamati film cult mai realizzati e rimane vietato in diversi paesi.
