Il film prende il nome da un'omonima rivista statunitense a fumetti molto apprezzata negli anni settanta, i cui disegni sono aggressivi e realistici, e dove il mescolarsi del pulp al fantasy creò un genere che ispirò, negli anni successivi, molte copertine di dischi del panorama hard rock, heavy metal, epic metal.
Il film è composto da vari episodi i cui autori sono diversi per ognuno. Ne venne realizzato un sequel nel 2000 dal titolo Heavy Metal 2000.
