Blu profondo rappresenta il maggior successo commerciale del regista Renny Harlin. Il film è stato girato principalmente ai Fox Baja Studios in Rosarito, Messico, dove la produzione scelse set cinematografici con ampi serbatoi d'acqua costruiti per le riprese del noto Titanic di James Cameron. La maggior parte degli squali apparsi nel film erano animatroni o creati digitalmente.
Retrospettivamente, Blu profondo è stato considerato uno dei film di squali di successo, specialmente all'interno di un genere limitato che è stato dominato dal thriller Lo squalo di Steven Spielberg.
